This article describes the experiences of a dairy cattle veterinarian at the Farm Service Clinic of Massey University Veterinary School, which provides veterinary services to about 75 dairy farms in the Manawatu, the region around Palmerston North. Tables listing production statistics (number of herds and cows, herd size, milk production) for New Zealand dairy herds during 1996/97, main dairy breeds and their characteristics and breeding management strategies, are presented. Feeding methods and some of the common diseases affecting the herds, such as lameness, mastitis and metabolic disorders, are also discussed
