Description
For a 1-year-period in a dairy herd in which lameness occurred, a study was made by clinical examination, investigation of herd management and environmental factors related to housing, milk recording and blood sampling. The incidence rate and the risk of lameness in the herd was 3.3/cow/year and 80%, and for laminitis 0.99/cow/year and 60%, respectively. Cases occurred throughout the period of housing and were not related to specific events (e.g. calving) in the animals. It was thought that environmental factors, particularly relating to the design of the cowshed, and lack of exercise predisposed to lameness
